Bands, Choirs & Ensembles

Bands, Choirs & Ensembles

We offer a wide range of ensembles for students to join in with and they are encouraged to take part as soon as they are ready. Many of our bands have differentiated levels of difficulty within the parts so that more beginner players can play alongside our advanced musicians.

Rehearsals take place each week in the music block. Regular attendance is essential and we expect musicians to make a committment when they join. Playing music alongside others is a wonderful thing and develops a whole host of different skills, as well as being great fun. Click here for 2018-19 Rehearsal Times

Presently we run the following ensembles:

Concert Band

Our largest ensemble, mostly made up of more experienced musicians. Includes all brass and woodwind instruments as well as a range of percussion. We perform regularly throughout the year at large scale concerts both in and outside the school

Jazz Bands

We run two ensembles, a junior and a senior group. Students develop confidence with their improvisation skills and learn a wide range of jazz repertoire. Woodwind, brass, guitarists, drummers and pianists are all welcome.

Choir (‘The St. Paul’s Singers’)

Our large, all year group choir sing music in a range of styles, from religous to popular. We sing music in either 2, 3 or 4 part, depending on the repertoire. Our choir continues to go from strength to strength, performing at St. Pauls Cathedral, Ghent Cathedral and All Saints Church in the last 2 years.

Woodwind Ensemble

Students develop their playing in this ensemble in preparation to join our Concert Band. Suitable for all woodwind players including complete beginners – if you can play a few notes then we have a part for you!

Latin Percussion

A group just for percussion players in which they develop their skills on a range of percussion instruments and in a variety of Latin styles.

String Quartet

Our senior string players, often in demand for local civic occasions and private bookings.

Junior Strings

A group for beginner string players where they will learn to take on different roles within an ensemble and work towards public performances.

Flute Ensemble

We run a junior and senior group and introduce our flautists to the other types/sizes of flute.

Piano Trio

Violin, ‘cello and piano. One of our most successful chamber groups and in high demand for public performances.

Rock School

A chance for guitarists, drummers, keyboard players and singers to form their own bands and be mentored by senior students. We hold regular gigs and ‘showcase’ concerts for them to perform at.

Music Theory

Music theory lessons are available (free of charge) at lunchtimes each week from Mr Currer, our theory teacher. Students work in ability groups and encouraged to work towards grade exams.

Sound Crew

Students can get hands-on training and experience with live mixing and sound production.
